September Thoughts

4/21/12
As is probably obvious, my sort-of-daily entries have tailed way off lately.  I am going to leave what is here as an historical artifact.  The main purpose of this blog will be to archive my articles and essays.

Lots of activity but not much writing in this section.
On 10 September, Joan and I went to the GOP Chili Fest at the Scamman Farm in Stratham.  We met several candidates, but none of the big-gun presidential wannabees.  I have covered this event in detail on the "Chili Fest" page.
One of the candidates we met was Ovide Lamontagne and he told Joan and then me that he was running for Governor.  We were hoping he would.  Until then, he had only said he was considering a run.  I wrote our meeting up and sent it in to the American Thinker.  I have included the AT piece in the blog section and it includes a very nice picture of the next NH Governor.  (PS - Ovide has since formally announced.)
American Thinker ran a major essay of mine on the fisheries.  It is a pessimistic piece.  I interviewed Russell Sherman, the captain of the fishing vessel Lady Jane, and the writer of the letter to President Obama.  I have included this article in the blog section.

The republican won.  I did vote for the libertarian.  I suppose I should be somewhat pleased that the democrat lost.  However, the republican appears to be a real RINO.  What swung my vote was the Right to Work bill, passed by both houses of the NH legislature but vetoed by Governor Lynch.  Overriding the veto is going to be close.  I am told the newly elected republican will vote against the override.
Right to Work states have an advantage over competing states in attracting businesses and thus jobs.
The Republican Party still has factions and severe in-fighting.  Robert Taft vs Eisenhower, Rockefeller vs Goldwater, GHW Bush vs Reagan, and so on.  New Hampshire has their own in-fighting and it troubles me.  How did the republicans ever lose the state to the democrats?  Was it in-fighting?

9/5/11
It's Labor Day.  A restful weekend.
There is a special election tomorrow for Sate Representative from my district (the14th).  There are three candidates; a democrat, a republican, and a libertarian.  Normally I would vote for the republican, but he opposes the Right to Work initiative and would vote to sustain the Governor's veto.  I believe in Right to Work so I will vote for the libertarian.
The process bothers me.  Will we see a lot of this in the upcoming general elections, where the libertarians, tea partiers, and republicans share a pool of votes and allow the democrats to win with less than a majority?  Something to guard against.
Well, back to relaxing for the rest of the long weekend.

Whoops!  Dow Jones down 250 or so.  Thanks, Barry.
My Patriots managed to come from ahead last night and pulled out a loss.  Such is the pre-season.
I am reading "Portrait of a Spy" by Daniel Silva.  It is up to his usual standards and includes his oblique impression of the President.  Could be our old friend Barry.  More on this later.

9/1/11
This is the first day of September.  I thought I would start what amounts to a diary of my activities and thoughts relative to politics and other things of interest.
The Patriots played their last pre-season game tonight and I watched the first half.  They looked good, should be an interesting season.
President Obama backed down on his request for a joint congressional session to hear his speech on "Jobs."  He is now scheduled for 7PM on 8 September.  I will listen to the speech and report on my impressions.
In NH politics, Jack Kimball resigned as chairman of the state GOP.  I am not pleased as it appears as if the establishment Republicans and the Tea Party are going to split the anti-Obama vote.  More on this later.
